Keep yourself safe when job searching online

It is important that you apply only through official channels and work directly with organizations
that are hiring as opposed to third parties who may charge you high fees to find a job.

Things you can do to protect yourself when job searching:

  • Apply directly on/through an employer’s website and check for verified company addresses. Most hiring managers will have an email address with the company name in it.
  • Avoid job opportunities that don’t involve a phone/video interview. Most legitimate employers will want to interview you and talk about why you are suitable for the position.
  • Do not share your personal information, such as banking information, with an employer until you have been officially hired. Reputable employers will not require this for anyone who is not on their payroll.
  • Research the employer online before you apply for a job. Online presence and reviews can help you determine if the employer is reputable.
  • Protect your personal information by not including unnecessary details on your resume, such as your home address, passport number or names of family members.
  • If you have questions about the validity of an employer or a job offer, please contact immigration@gov.nl.ca for assistance.

Do not submit payment to anyone when applying for or accepting a job offer. There is also no cost to submit your application to immigrate to Newfoundland and Labrador through our economic immigration programs. Avoid unauthorized agents or intermediaries, and, if you are asked for any payment by a recruiter, prospective employer or other third party, please do not proceed.

Please note: your role in Newfoundland and Labrador may require certification or licensure (for example, in healthcare or education). When applying to immigrate to Newfoundland and Labrador, you may also be required to provide language testing results, an Educational Credential Assessment or other documentation. These steps often come with a cost to you, but you will not be asked to take any of these steps until you have a conditional job offer, and you will be provided with a list of required documents and information about approved providers.
